BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Pompili joined in 2007 as Assistant Professor the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Rutgers University, where he is the director of the Cyber Physical Systems Laboratory (CPS Lab). He is also site co-director of the Center for Autonomic Computing (CAC), a multi-institutional research center funded by the NSF I/UCRC program that combines resources from universities (University of Florida, University of Arizona, Rutgers University, and Mississippi State University), private companies, and the federal government to conduct fundamental research on making computer systems and applications more reliable, secure, and efficient.

Dr. Pompili received a Ph.D. in ECE from the Georgia Institute of Technology (GaTech) in June 2007 after working at the Broadband Wireless Networking Laboratory (BWN-Lab) with Prof. I. F. Akyildiz.. In 2005, he was awarded GaTech BWN-Lab Researcher of the Year for "outstanding contributions and professional achievements". He had previously received his 'Laurea' (integrated B.S. and M.S.) and Doctorate degrees in Telecommunications and Systems Engineering from the University of Rome "La Sapienza," Italy, in 2001 and 2004, respectively.

His research interests include wireless sensor networks, underwater acoustic communication and coordination of underwater vehicles, green computing, and network optimization and control. He is author of many influential research articles on these topics. He serves on the editorial board of Ad Hoc Networks (Elsevier) Journal and on the technical program committee of several leading conferences on networking such as INFOCOM, MASS, SECON, GLOBECOM, ICC. In 2011, he received the NSF CAREER award for his work on underwater multimedia acoustic communication. He is member of the IEEE Communications Society and the ACM.

RESEARCH

Dr. Pompili is the director of the Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) Lab, whose overarching mission is to propose novel sensing paradigms to transform raw heterogeneous data into valuable information (by giving semantic meaning to the collected data) and then into knowledge through information fusion and integration.

Such paradigms will apply to those distributed systems that need to timely react to sensor information with an effective action such as cyber-physical systems, which feature a tight combination of, and coordination between, the system's computational and physical elements. The significance of the research is to leverage the acquired knowledge to broaden the potential of cyber-physical systems in several dimensions, including: augmentation of human capabilities, understanding of human activities, coordination of heterogeneous sensors, operation in dangerous or inaccessible environments.

The CPS Lab is active on the following research areas:

  • Wireless Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks
  • Underwater Acoustic Communications, Underwater Vehicle Coordination, Team Formation/Steering, Task Allocation
  • Thermal Management of Datacenters, Mobile Grids, Green Computing
  • Cognitive Radio Networks, Dynamic Spectrum Allocation, Software Defined Radios
  • Traffic Engineering, Overlay Networks, Network Optimization and Control
Projects, demos, and more information on current students, visiting researchers, and alumni can be found at: http://nsfcac.rutgers.edu/CPS/
If you want to join my lab as a Ph.D. student, first you need to be admitted by the Rutgers ECE Graduate School (info here). When applying, you need to select the Computer Engineering (CE) group AND mention my name in your statement letter. DO NOT contact me via email as I will NOT be able to respond due to the heavy email traffic.

  • La Fuga dei Talenti, a book by Sergio Nava published in 2009 on the Italian "brain drain" phenomenon, which is coming under the international spotlight as it highlights many of Italy's structural problems. The book, which immediately turned into a blog and later into a radio show ("Giovani Talenti"), is a crude expose' of this appalling situation: a unique collection of stories of young Italian expatriates (including mine), who were able to restart their life as soon as they left the country.
