BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Dario Pompili joined the faculty of the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Rutgers in 2007, where he is the director of the Cyber-Physical Systems Laboratory (CPS Lab) and the site co-director of the NSF I/UCRC Center for Cloud and Autonomic Computing (CAC). Since 2012, he is also associate director of application collaborations for CPS of the Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute (RDI2).
He received a PhD degree in ECE from the Georgia Institute of Technology (GaTech) in 2007, where he worked at the Broadband Wireless Networking Laboratory (BWN-Lab) led by Prof. I. F. Akyildiz. He had previously received a 'Laurea' (integrated BS/MS) and Doctorate degrees in Telecommunications and Systems Engineering from the University of Rome "La Sapienza," Italy, in 2001 and 2004, respectively.
In 2011, Dr. Pompili received the prestigious NSF CAREER award to design efficient communication solutions for underwater multimedia applications. In 2012, he received the ONR Young Investigator Program (YIP) award,
one out of 26 awarded nationwide, to develop an uncertainty-aware autonomic mobile computing grid framework as well as the DARPA Young Faculty Award (YFA), one out of 51 awarded nationwide, to enable real-time information processing based on compute-intensive models for operational neuroscience.
He published about a hundred refereed scholar publications: with about 4,500 citations, Dr. Pompili has an h-index of 24 and a i10-index of 36 (Google Scholar, Nov'14). He is a Senior Member of both the
IEEE Communications Society and the ACM.

RESEARCH

Dr. Pompili's CPS Lab aims at designing, developing, and implementing novel sensing strategies to transform heterogeneous raw data into valuable information and then into knowledge through real-time in-situ information fusion and inference. These strategies apply to those distributed systems that need to timely react to sensor information with an effective action such as CPS, which feature a tight combination of - and coordination between - the system's computational and physical elements. The CPS Lab is active in the following research areas:

  • Wireless Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks: from theory to practice
  • Underwater Acoustic Communications, Vehicle Coordination, Team Formation/Steering, Task Allocation
  • Thermal Management of Datacenters, Mobile Grid Computing, Green Computing
  • Cognitive Radio Networks, Dynamic Spectrum Allocation, Software Defined Radios, Cloud Radio Access Networks
  • Traffic Engineering, Overlay Networks, Network Optimization and Control

  • La Fuga dei Talenti, a book by Sergio Nava published in 2009 on the Italian "brain drain" phenomenon, which is coming under the international spotlight as it highlights many of Italy's structural problems. The book, which immediately turned into a blog and later into a radio show ("Giovani Talenti"), is a crude expose' of this appalling situation: a unique collection of stories of young Italian expatriates (including mine).
