BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Pompili joined the faculty of the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Rutgers Univ. in 2007, where he is the director of the Cyber-Physical Systems Laboratory (CPS Lab) and the site co-director of the Center for Cloud and Autonomic Computing (CAC), a multi-institutional research center funded by the NSF I/UCRC program that combines resources from universities, private companies, and the federal government to conduct fundamental research on making computer systems and applications more reliable, secure, and efficient. Since 2012, he is also associate director of application collaborations of the Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute (RDI2), which provides academic/industry researchers with the resources, skills, and expert support to leverage computation technology.
He received a Ph.D. in ECE from the Georgia Institute of Technology (GaTech) in 2007 after working at the Broadband Wireless Networking Laboratory (BWN-Lab) with Prof. I. F. Akyildiz. He had previously received his 'Laurea' (integrated B.S./M.S.) and Doctorate degrees in Telecommunications and Systems Engineering from the University of Rome "La Sapienza," Italy, in 2001 and 2004, respectively.
In 2011, Dr. Pompili received the NSF CAREER award to design efficient communication solutions for underwater multimedia applications. In 2012, he received the ONR Young Investigator Program (YIP) award to develop an uncertainty-aware autonomic mobile computing grid framework as well as the DARPA Young Faculty Award (YFA) to enable complex real-time information processing based on compute-intensive models for operational neuroscience.
He published more than 80 referred publications: with more than 3,000 citations, Dr. Pompili has an h-index of 21 and a i10-index of 28 (Google Scholar, 04/13). He is member of the IEEE Communications Society and the ACM.

RESEARCH

Dr. Pompili's CPS Lab aims at designing, developing, and implementing novel sensing strategies to transform heterogeneous raw data into valuable information and then into knowledge through real-time in-situ information fusion/integration. These strategies apply to those distributed systems that need to timely react to sensor information with an effective action such as CPS, which feature a tight combination of, and coordination between, the system's computational and physical elements. The CPS Lab is active on the following research areas:

  • Underwater Acoustic Communications, Vehicle Coordination, Team Formation/Steering, Task Allocation
  • Thermal Management of Datacenters, Mobile Grids, Green Computing

  • A tutorial on Dynamic Programming
  • La Fuga dei Talenti, a book by Sergio Nava published in 2009 on the Italian "brain drain" phenomenon, which is coming under the international spotlight as it highlights many of Italy's structural problems. The book, which immediately turned into a blog and later into a radio show ("Giovani Talenti"), is a crude expose' of this appalling situation: a unique collection of stories of young Italian expatriates (including mine).
