Elements of the distributed array/grid can be
accessed uniformly using normal array indexing (such as Fortran 90 triplets),
using user-defined partition overlaps for nearest neighbor communication,
using explicit send/receive communication, etc. The access scheme criterion
compares access methodology provided by the systems.
