Vishal M. Patel, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rutgers University, was awarded a Young Investigator Research Program (YIP) grant from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Science and Technology for his research related to the development of robust and efficient methods for learning structured representations of multimodal data. He will develop methods for multimodal metric learning and multimodal data fusion based on sparse and low-rank representations.
Patel, who joined the Rutgers faculty in 2015, has research interests in security and privacy, computer vision, and signal/image processing.
The ONR YIP is one of the oldest and most selective scientific research advancement programs in the country. Its purpose is to fund early-career academic researchers — called investigators — whose scientific pursuits show outstanding promise for supporting the Department of Defense, while also promoting their professional development.
