Why ECE @ Rutgers?

  1. We provide a highly respected and dynamic electrical and computer engineering program with world-class labs in such cutting-edge areas as cloud computing, wireless/mobile communications, signal processing, and nanotechnology. Despite these difficult economic times, we have been able to move the department forward and cover a wider range of research applications. We’ve expanded our program with a new department chair and four new assistant professors. Other department features and achievements include:
    • A faculty with 32 tenure-track members, including a a member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), 10 IEEE fellows, one presidential faculty fellow, and 7 NSF CAREER/YI award winners.
    • Our faculty and students have received media coverage by CNN television, NY Times, the NY Times Editorial Department, Scientific American, MIT Technology Review, NJ Star Ledger, HPCwire, NETWORKWORLD, among many others.
    • Our projects have also been featured in prominent museums such as the American Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Museum.
    • Rutgers ECE provides access to world-renowned programs in Math/Statistics and the frequent workshops organized by DIMACS.
    • Our students have gone on to faculty positions at the University of Maryland, Pennsylvania State University, Carnegie Mellon University, Stevens Institute of Technology and many others. Other graduates have joined leading industry research laboratories such as Northrop Grumman, AT&T Labs, General Motors, Alcatel-Lucent, Sarnoff, IBM, Hewlett Packard, Intel, Sun Micro Systems, BBN, Qualcom, Telecordia, NASA, NEC, Siemens, Lockheed Martin, Merrill Lynch, Motorola, Citigroup, Accenture, JP Morgan Chase, General Dynamics, Apple, Marvel Technology Group, Ford, Microsoft, Hitachi, Texas Instr., Nokia, Yahoo, Thomson Inc., Sony R&D, Toshiba.
  2. We seek to provide plenty of internal and external opportunities to fund your graduate education:
    • Our department receives approximately $7 million in external research funding per year and a large part of these funds are used to fund graduate research assistant (GA) positions for PhD students.
    • The Rutgers ECE-Northrop Grumman Fellowships support graduate studies through a combination of an ECE Fellowship wth stipend and a paid summer internship at Northrop Grumman at Linthicum (Baltimore), Maryland. This opportunity is open to new master or PhD level ECE students with interest in computer engineering with FPGA expertise, and/or electrical engineering with digital design expertise.   US Citizenship is required.
    • Our students have received other top-tier competitive industry fellowships to fund their studies (e.g., IBM). Rutgers ECE was also selected among 11 top American universities for participation in the Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship program in 2011. Our students competed with top universities such as MIT, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, UIUC, Berkeley, and UCSD.
    • We provide approximately 25 teaching assistant (TA) positions, and most go to incoming PhD students.
    • Graduate student (GA/TA) salaries are very competitive, at approximately $27,000 + tuition and fees, in 2012.
    • Our NY metro area location provides plentiful opportunities to self-fund your studies through well-paid summer internships in technology or financial firms. We provide programs of partnership with outside industry for placing Rutgers ECE students in appropriate summer positions with excellent opportunities for hiring after completion of academic education.
  3. Located at the heart of NJ, the convenient geographical location provides plenty of opportunities for work and play:
    • Opportunities for collaboration with other top schools such as MIT, Princeton, UPenn, CMU, UMass, NYU, and Columbia.
    • Taking classes at Princeton University through a joint Rutgers-Princeton program.
    • Research collaboration and internships with top industry research labs such as IBM TJ Watson Research Center, Alcatel-Lucent, Quallcomm R&D, ATT labs, NEC, and national laboratories in Washington DC.
    • Access to job and internship opportunities in the financial hub of NYC.

    NYC is just an hour away by train or coach bus, which departs right from our campus to Manhattan! Visits to Princeton, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Boston are very common and convenient. Highly recommended as well is the 7hr train ride to the Niagara falls! Life here is a palette of beauty, fun and adventure. Enjoy the fall colors, pack your backpacks for a hike, raft your way through the white waters, enjoy a peaceful day kayaking on the Princeton lake, get ready to ski the snow clad mountains or just be amazed by a suite of cuisine varieties available for dining in and around the area.

  4. Many labs and research areas that are actively recruiting graduate students:
    • SiCLAB has a complete line of special equipment for high power SiC device design, fabrication and characterization. It has been one of the most funded SiC research labs in the country, and hosts multiple DARPA SiC programs. The lab was a recent awardee of the extremely competitive ARPA-E program.
    • WINLAB focuses on all aspects of wireless communication and networking – from communication theory to mobile apps. It leads the highly visible MobilityFirst project and hosts the ORBIT wireless test-bed. This 400-node test-bed operates in WINLAB’s tech center facility just a few minutes away from the campus and provides unparalleled resources for experimental wireless work. We are especially interested in students that are interested in such experimental work.

      The Parknet project

    • CAC: The Center for Autonomic Computing, provides leadership in the area of cloud computing. Example topics of interest include Wireless Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks, Underwater Acoustic Communications, Underwater Vehicle Coordination, Team Formation/Steering, Task Allocation, Thermal Management of Datacenters, Green Computing.
    • Nanotechnology: Example topics of interest include nano-electro-mechanical relay devices and technology for energy-efficient electronics; neural relay devices for efficient design and implementation of neuromorphic systems; advanced materials and process technology for energy-harvesting devices.
    • CSPL: The Communications and Signal Processing Laboratory focuses on research in the area of statistical signal processing, system modeling and system identification. Applications of interest include wireless communications, networking and biomedical engineering. Currently, openings are available on the topic of MIMO Radar and Resource Award Radar Systems.
