- Research Interests
- Communications and information processing area.
Special interests include stochastic processes in communication, detection
and estimation theory, information theory and coding, multidimensional
digital signal processing, optical communications systems.
Present research activities are focused on data/bandwidth compression
techniques in the context of image coding and transmission, including:
combined source and channel encoding of image data with emphasis on the
use of two-dimensional (2-D) Differential Pulse Code Modulation methods;
communication system performance evaluation using different modulation
and coding strategies in conjunction with both Gaussian and fading channel
characterizations; and application of rate-distortion theoretic principles
to image transmission system design and the development of performance
bounds.
Recent research efforts include investigation of combined source-channel
coding approaches to 2-D transform and hybrid image coding techniques;
development of new rational rate convolutional code constructions and decoding
procedures; stochastic image modeling and segmentation for real-world
imagery analysis and/or transmission; and analysis of fiber optic communication
systems.
